Easy as riding a bike: SimpleGeo API and iPhone 4.0 background location

Andrew Mager April 30, 2010 2:43 pm San Francisco, CA see all Products posts

This month, Apple announced a background location feature for the next generation of their iPhone platform, and developers are already starting to use it with SimpleGeo’s API.

Andre Navarro (@ecito) from Houston is one of the first to build something. While it’s quite simple, it’s still really cool to see the possibilities of what background location can do. Navarro tested out his app called “privacyisforwhips” on a bike ride through Houston:

He used a Javascript polyline encoder to follow his tracks on a Google map, adding records to his SimpleGeo layer. He also built a website that tracks his every move.

Navarro open-sourced the code, and you can play with it on on Github.

Have you built anything with background location? If so, we’d like to hear about it.
